It’s almost impossible to run your car scratch-free on the busy roads, but if somehow you manage, those mischievous elements in your neighborhood wouldn’t let the car escape the scrape. Now, however, with the newly developed polyurethane film by the scientists from the University of Southern Mississippi, all you need to do is park that car somewhere under the sun, and breathe a sigh to see the scratch on the exterior disappear in about 30 minutes’ time, though the speed depends on the intensity of sunshine.
The self-healing material by Dr. Marek Urban is a prototype that will allow cars and other equipment, like cellphones and electronics, which are vulnerable to scratches and blemishes, to experience the self-repair superiority enjoyed by the human skin. The material made of polyurethane (the major component), four molecule oxetane ring and chitosan, utilizes UV light from the sun to combine the three chemicals to react accordingly for a reaction wherein, the polyurethane is ripped off and the UV light links with oxetane ring and chitosan to create a bonding to fix up the scratch on the surface.
