Robot Rex follows soldiers to the battlefield only on voice commands
Bharat | Oct 22 2009

The latest to follow the ground forces on operations on the battlefield is Rex, a small six-wheel-drive load-bearing robotic vehicle. Designed by Israel Aerospace Industries specifically to follow the lead soldier from a given distance and to carry huge loads off the back of the soldiers it’ll follow, Rex easily carries about 400 pounds of load and follows the foot soldiers for about 72 hours without the need to refuel, always obeying the voice commands like “stop,” “fetch,” and “heel.”

Justifying Rex’s abilities on field IAI’s Director of Innovation Ofer Glazer said,

The robotic vehicle follows the lead soldier from a given distance, utilizing technology developed and patented by IAI. Using simple commands (one might give his pet dog), including ’stop,’ ‘fetch,’ and ‘heel,’ the lead soldier controls the robot without being distracted from the mission at hand. The Rex platform is unique in its state-of-the-art operational capabilities and its user-friendly interface, both of which are central to the platform’s superior performance.
