Researchers develop Gymnobot – A knifefish in robotic avatar
Bharat | Sep 24 2009

Nature-inspired creations have been treated with robotic genius to take down into waters to reveal the secrets of the deep aquatic life. A new entrant for the chore, but for specifically around the shores, is a University of Bath-developed swimming robot which inspired by the knifefish, has a fin attached to its underside of its body to propel it.

Dubbed the Gymnobot, with a unique propelling fin, which makes a wave in the water, the robot can easily navigate through shallow waters without entangling itself anywhere, thus making a good proposition for a fish robot to film and study the diverse marine life near the seashores.

This body-length fin propeller according to the researchers is potentially much more efficient than regular propellers, and if all works well, could also be employed in the larger aquatic vehicles to help swim more efficiently even against the water currents.
