Modder makes PC from a 25-year-old phone
Bharat | Aug 27 2009

Ripping things off to come up with something even exciting is a passion for some. While most do it for the craze, some get to the modification because they have the available resources - but are they the right resources, not sure enough. Going back decades, Finnish modder Jani Pönkkö took a 25-year-old mobile telephone (Mobira handset), you can just guess what mobile phones would have been in that era, and turned it into a media PC.

Flinging open the receiver of the telephone, Pönkkö stuffed it with status LEDs, a Wi-Fi card, a sound card and speaker, and topped it all off with a 128 x 182 OLED panel. Threading the USB cable through the curly cable of the phone, Jani got it connected into the main unit housing the motherboard, monitor and audio portage with a 32GB solid-state hard drive. Video after the jump.

Adding an additional vent for cooling the system, Pönkkö has taken about 40 hours to get the thing sorted perfect. It may be a tack noisier than the other cool mods we’ve seen but it great to see that the look of the original handset is maintained post the modification too.
