Walk into a neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital, where the critical infants lie, struggling for survival, in those incubators. The quality of the incubators is so pitiable in the developing countries that the infant’s life is set at high risk, while the developed countries enjoy the benefits of the best possible medical aids. Massachusetts-based designers for the benefit of the developing nations are developing a low-cost neo-natal infant incubator from auto parts.
Using a combined sum of $300,000, the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT) and Design That Matters, have worked on the incubator prototype. The incubator is powered by a motorcycle engine, though it also runs on electricity. With a detachable lower portion, the incubater will have BMX tires for all terrain vulnerability. The headlights of the car are used to generate heat within the incubator, which is evenly circulated by a fan. The incubator is expected to be made available for under $1000 within 18 months.
