iBOT: Segway in a wheelchair, a medical boon
Bharat | Jan 12 2009

Medical technology has come to the aid of many, and lately it has shifted concerns toward patients suffering with severe mobility issues. Wheelchairs of many kinds have been made, but this one called the iBot by Dean Kamen developed in partnership between DEKA and Johnson and Johnson’s Independence Technology, is one of a kind. Being mobile powered, the Segway iBOT has been a positive assistance for patients like Michael Kaplan.

The iBOT can walk up and down the stairs, in the sand and over shallow waters. Controlled by a remote control, the sturdy wheelchair can be rolled over ramps and lifted into vehicles and stuff. In maneuverability, the iBOT can erect to a height of about 6 feet, maintaining balance using software called iBALANCE that receives data via sensors and gyroscopes. So, the user has a Segway scooter in a wheelchair, when using the iBOT, but like no good thing comes cheap, the iBOT too is priced at $26,100 – ah! A wheelchair for the rich!
