High-flying Hopper robots coming to US military
Bharat | Sep 16 2009

After all elusive robots we have treated our eyes with, comes this really outstanding, err, a high-flying robot. A brainchild of the Pentagon’s mad science agency, DARPA, and Boston Dynamics, this Precision Urban Hopper, in construction for the US military, has been done well to leap over obstacles and walls of more than 7.5m (25ft) high.

The robot can manage this high leap courtesy of a piston-actuated “leg” fitted to it. For the movement on the ground and in tiring terrains, the little shoebox-sized robot is based on four wheels. Being laden well for military duties, the bot is semi-autonomous in nature and is GPS-guided to cater to the surveillance chores as well. The Hopper won’t be ready for action until 2010, so the wait seems long but it isn’t much. Follow the jump for a visual treat of the Hopper leaping over a really high fence.
